Clash in a smarter way!

Building Information Modeling is a method of achieving collaboration and coordination in the implementation of design and other aspects of a construction project. Engineering design is a dynamic field that necessitates effective coordination among a variety of stakeholders to achieve desired results. Building design project entails multiple stakeholders, including structural engineers, architects, contractors, suppliers, and vendors, which can make the project completion process extremely complicated and complex. Furthermore, the entire building design and construction ecosystem are confronted with the difficulty of project completion on schedule. Precision and accuracy are key aspects throughout the design phase in such a circumstance.


Clash detection is a term used frequently by AEC firms. Three-dimensional drafting of computational models allows for this type of early detection of discrepancies in the design process. Detecting discrepancies is critical because they can have a significant impact on the construction process, resulting in delays, design changes, material costs, and budget overruns. Clashes are typical in construction projects with multidisciplinary teams working on a single construction project. Clashes can be geometric, with one structure passing through where it shouldn’t, or schedule-based, with elements occurring concurrently rather than sequentially.


There are three types of clashes: hard clash, soft clash and workflow clash. Many hard and soft clashes, as well as workflow clashes, occur when designs from various disciplines are combined on a shared platform. 


If such model coordination is not done properly this can result in significant rework. For example, problems occur when the MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing) models have not been checked against the structural models. This can result in concrete formwork having to be reworked to allow for conduits to pass through. This is very expensive and unnecessary. By evaluating the constructability or operations of the structure, BIM effectively assists contractors and construction engineers in discovering these clashes.


Clashes existed even before the advent of building information modeling methodology in older construction projects. Their detection, on the other hand, was time-consuming since it was mostly done manually. Construction crews would lay out the 2D blueprints and manually check for any potential clashes. 


Working as part of a multidisciplinary team might be difficult due to the high level of BIM model coordination and administration that is required. Modern clash detection techniques have the advantage of detecting clashes early and resolving them before the design is built. As a result, a large sum of money can be saved.




The term clash detection encompasses a variety of clashes. There are three types of clashes: hard clash, soft clash and workflow clash.


Hard clash: A hard clash occurs when two objects take up an identical space. Hard clash detection is carried out using algorithms that are built in the BIM object and are based on geometry and rules.


Soft clash: A soft clash indicates that an object has not been given sufficient geometric tolerances in the design phase or if its buffer zone has been violated. Soft clash detection can even show whether or not an object complies with building codes.


Workflow clash: A workflow clash results from inconsistent or conflicting building information. This form of clash occurs when elements occur simultaneously rather than sequentially. 


Why do clashes occur? 


Clashes are usually discovered and resolved in BIM coordination, at a moment in time when a model or several models together are handed over to other parties. If so, they are resolved only when the model itself is already considered finished. Clashes used to be discovered when the models of all contributing parties were considered to be final.


The causes of clashes are multiple. Only some clashes may occur because of technical errors. The most obvious causes are plain design or modeling errors. But beyond that, the modeled components clash because of differences in the modeled level of detail, or there may be differences in the geometric representations between different software and model formats.


More common causes come down to the process, due to the fact that digital models necessitate completeness and precision even when the design is still in development. When multiple parties contribute models, they all have insufficient information about the final design. Insufficient information will necessitate them to place placeholders with exaggerated geometries. In other cases, the model may express not definitive geometry but merely design intent. These models may nonetheless persist even into the detailing phase. Finally, lack of (specificity in) design rules will cause parties that model concurrently to intrude into one another’s design space.


Quintessentially, clashes are a symptom of the siloed nature of construction project teams, where partners from multiple disciplines work isolated from one another. Even when cloud-based common data environments are available, they might not (sufficiently) support clash detection, and there may be a need for but lack of experts who can execute the checks.


To some extent, to expect no clashes at all could be considered even unrealistic, because all parties must submit their work due before deadlines, regardless of the complexities of the design. In that case, clashes are an opportunity for a project team to become aware of unresolved design issues and to adjust their planning to accommodate for previously unknown challenges before they grow out of hand or are even passed down to the next phase.


How to spot clashes?


Verifi3D supports clash detection in three forms: manually, automated, and assisted.


Manual clashing is supported by simple to use, easy 3D navigation. Using Section Box and Measurement Line tools, and either element orbit or first-person view, the user can visually inspect clashes. Selective display supported by features such as Element browser, Filters, context-dependent Smart Filters, and the innovative ghosting slider allows the user multiple ways in which they can classify the building information and obtain displays of the information they need in order to find clashes. While time-consuming, manual clashing well done is an efficient way for the human user to gain a higher-level understanding of the underlying causes of clashes that occur in the models and allows them to formulate their findings accordingly. Challenging our desire to automate everything, this process is very suitable in the design phase, where the relative truthiness of the digital models depends on many factors that are hard to grasp for computers and may elude even the most complex algorithms.


Automated clash checks can be set up by using one of Verifi3D’s built-in clash algorithms to create parametrically defined Rule Sets. Catering to different scenarios, Verifi3D has a hard Clash Check, a soft clash check called “Free Space Check” (upcoming), and intersection checks that test individual and federated models for any occurring intersections.


Assisted clash checking can be understood as a hybrid between manual and automated checks, made possible by the simple and interactive user interface in Verifi3D. The aim is seamless transitions from purely manual checking to the use of user-defined filters, to the use of algorithmic checks. In construction projects, there are always edge cases and unforeseen situations. Assisted checking workflows allow the user to make manual checking more efficient, and to make automated checking more meaningful.


How to resolve clashes? 


Through integrations with both CDEs such as Autodesk Construction Cloud and Autodesk BIM 360 and issue trackers such as BIM Track, BIMcollab and BIM 360 issues, V3D integrates into your workflow. It allows all users to check their clashes even before they hand over their models. More frequent checking means that modelers become aware of issues earlier in time and contact their project partners ahead of time if necessary. More frequent checking means fewer issues accumulate. Fast feedback loops between checks and authoring software, allow partners to bring together and align their models in one shared, up-to-date environment with minimal effort.


How to avoid clashes? 


Verifi3D comes with all ingredients for avoiding clashes. Once the project team has agreed to work in a BIM workflow that includes model coordination in Verifi3D, it is possible to make use of advanced clash detection algorithms and to create checking templates to be used by all members of the project team. Then model coordination can take place based on a common data environment. Checking becomes a distributed, collective activity, executed together by all members of the team, in a shared workspace. This allows for a pro-active, iterative workflow, in which feedback from the data validation tool is constantly available, akin to a spell-checker. As more data in standard formats are combined into models, software tools are likely to become more sophisticated. Working on a single collaborative, coordinated building model rather than numerous models brought together to form a single complete model at key stages should significantly reduce the number of project clashes.

Verifi3D Integrates with Autodesk BIM 360 to Streamline Model Checks


Xinaps is happy to announce an integration between its cloud-based model checker, Verifi3D, and Autodesk BIM 360®, a leading construction management software, to drive more productivity in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry.

Offered as a SaaS (Software as a Service) solution, Verifi3D allows users to classify their building data, visualize it in the Verifi3D Viewer, check it against international, local or project-specific rules and regulations, and export issue reports in different formats, such as BCF. Its integration with BIM 360 allows users to log in to Verifi3D with their Autodesk credentials to easily and instantly access their Revit ® or .IFC format models  saved in BIM 360.

Additionally, Xinaps and Autodesk  customers can now load their models from BIM 360 into the Verifi3D Viewer, perform checks and validations and create issue reports. These reports will then be saved automatically to the user’s BIM 360 project, enabling customers  to further centralize their communication and, reduce miscommunications that can lead to mistakes and schedule overruns.

BIM (Building Information Modelling) is proposed as the solution for all building professionals, project management teams, project owners, construction companies, in order to better design, construct and operate and maintain buildings. BIM represents the digitization of the construction industry. All data during the design, building, management and maintenance phases are recorded in Digital Twins, with all construction partners cooperating. BIM proposes that the creation of a Digital Twin, for the purposes of improving project outcomes, can result  in a more economical and sustainable construction industry (CI). 

Xinaps has identified that ensuring the quality of construction data is critically important to the data validation process and the production of Digital Twins for construction projects. Verifi3D is proposed as a data validation solution which allows this process to be seamlessly integrated with existing data workflows. Unlike competitors, Verifi3D is browser based & works off an SaaS licensing platform allowing greater accessibility and flexibility to its users. At the core of Verifi3D’s approach are the proprietary Autodesk rvt format and the IFC (Industry foundation classes) exchange format.  These file formats are the primary means by which Verifi3D conducts its data validation processes.  

IFC general overview 

Why did IFC come into being? 

IFC format came in to being in 1994 in order to support integrated application development – or what is now known as interoperability. Since 2005 the IFC format has been developed and maintained, as an industry-led, vendor neutral schema, by buildingSMART . The IFC schema came into being to encourage better communication between participants in the construction industry through the design, planning and execution phases of construction projects.

IFC is a standardized, digital description of the built environment which focuses on constructed and civil infrastructure. IFC is seen as the key ingredient in  open BIM. OpenBIM faciltates the collaboration process in the CI. Through OpenBIM Information can be easily shared between project participants. IFC is an exchange format which facilitates data transactions in the CI. The IFC schema specification can describe how a facility or installation is used, how it is constructed, and how it is operated. IFC is an information exchange format designed to faciltate improved collaboration in the CI. 

This is why Verifi3D prioritizes the support of the IFC schema. Verifi3D is regularly in contact with industry experts who specialize in the classification of construction information within this format. This is a highly technical area in which Verifi3D endeavor to ensure that the information provided for the purposes of data validation is accurately parsed into the Verifi3D environment. 

Revit general overview 

Why did RVT come into being?  

Proprietary file formats are those specific to their authoring software  and other permitted software. A RVT file is a proprietary Revit file [11]. Revit is at the forefront of the BIM movement and the most dominant file format in the US market for construction purposes[12].

Besides native Revit file formats, the Revit software also supports common computer-aided design (CAD) formats as well, such as DGN, SAT, DXF, DWF, and others. In addition to modeling and designing buildings, rvt file format can also be used to analyze its meta-data for analysis, clash coordination, and other tasks.  

Verifi3D prioritises the support of rvt formats because of their importance to our users groups. Much of the information produced internally (in-house) by these user groups is authored in rvt format and often the information delivery specification (IDS) for their projects stipulate that the information should be authored in rvt. This means that much of the supply chain produces its information in this format. Therefore, it is vitally important that Verifi3D  can quickly  import and validate this information in an accurate way.

Verifi3D has developed an efficient approach which allows users to identify bottlenecks in their existing workflows. Revit files can be brought directly into Verifi3D through our Revit Plugin and saved as a V3D file along with user settings. IFC files are brought into Verifi3D through an IFC engine which is also used by major AEC software providers such as Trimble (Sketch-Up). We also offer sync with BIM360 which means your workflow can be seamlessly integrated with your CDE. Models can then be checked and validated within the Verifi3D environment and issues can be reported in BIM Collab/ BIM 360 issues/ BIM Track.

The problem

The AEC landscape faces a myriad of challenges as the complexity of their projects increases. Global trends like population growth, urbanization and the transition towards Smart Cities are just a few examples of the main contributing factors. As a consequence, construction projects require several working phases, ever-growing amount of data and a wide diversity of competencies and skills, often leading to inaccuracies and miscalculations, costly and time-consuming rework. In the last couple of decades, we are witnessing an increase in the digitalization amongst AEC professionals, more specifically, the adoption of BIM (Building Information Modeling). While innovation has simplified a lot of operations, large-size  projects  still  suffer  from  slow communication and complex collaboration processes. Other difficulties are making large design dataset available and updated along the entire working cycle.

The importance of innovation

Innovation is key to overcoming these challenges, especially when triggered by the leaders in the industry. TBI is a major holding company in the engineering and construction industry located in the Netherlands, whose goal is to develop, renew and maintain the physical living environment in a sustainable way. Thanks to its strong group of companies and long experience, TBI is able to perform several types of assignments, from small initiatives to complex, high-profile projects, becoming a reference point for private and public clients. Digital enabler

TBI SSC-ICT is one the daughter companies of TBI that support corporate innovation and has been proactively engaged in the in the innovation process of Xinaps. As a front runner of digitization in the building and construction industry, they have seen the potential benefits of Xinaps for several TBI-companies. When Xinaps asked for a pilot, they have been the valuable connector between Xinaps and Hazenberg Bouw. Important for establishing digital transformation within the TBI holding company. Hazenberg Bouw, embraces the innovators mindset, becoming one of Verifi3D’s first adopters.

The solution

Although there are numerous tools out there performing model checks and data validation, designing an ‘easy-to-use’ integrated solution for different  VDC  professionals  is  complex. One of the all-rounded tools, launched in September  2019,  is  Verifi3D  by Xinaps. Verifi3D  is a cloud-based SaaS (Software-as-a-Service), which allows classifying building design data, conducting automated checks in compliance with regulations and reporting issues realtime. All in one platform. The solution’s cloud-based structure facilitates the communication between project members in a Common Data Environment  (CDE),  while  the  automated processes unload the operator from the time consuming task of manually validating the design  and  its  consistency.  Verifi3D  further helps professionals stay compliant with global, local  and  project-specific  requirements, as well as with ISO 19650 standards. Valuable  experiences  with  Verifi3D  have been shared by TBI (Techniek, Bouw en Infra).

The results

Hazenberg Bouw is an engineering, construction  and  infrastructure  firm,  which benefits of a wide portfolio of competencies: from apartments and houses to roads, bridges and more, Hazenberg is capable of satisfying the most complex customers’ request. Verifi3D  showed  its  benefits  since  the  very early stage of use. Thanks to its intuitive user interface and simple menu configuration, the operators managed to comfortably use the tool  just  after  a  few  clicks.  Verifi3D’s  main advantage is its user-friendliness: Verifi3D does not require long training hours or extensive previous software knowledge. The Hazenberg team  was  pleased  to  see  a  significant  cut  of hours that otherwise would have been spent on training. Difficulties  in  data  processing  and  format integration are a common challenge when importing large datasets into an on-premise design software. Processing design models could become a cumbersome and time costly operation, especially if users don’t have considerable computational power available.

The power of the cloud was one of the main advantages for Hazenberg Bouw – when using Verifi3D, there is no need to possess the ultimate hardware because Verifi3D runs the models on cloud. Moreover, the team showed a positive response towards the ability to export their own models directly from Revit and to work directly on the source file. Hazenberg mentioned that Verifi3D’s third-party integration with Autodesk BIM 360 and Revit and IFC support facilitated their collaboration with other teams and within the company. Sharing a model has never been so easy! Considering the cloud structure, the Hazenberg Bouw team mentioned that Verifi3D is capable of bringing their workflow to a next level:

real-time. Often that requires many professionals
to be physically present in the same room. The cloud
structure of Verifi3D overcomes these obsolete patterns
and brings the working flow to a different level.

Surely, this characteristic improves productivity and efficiency with 40-50% even in the early stages of its use and makes the design process more consistent, since every team member can always access the latest version of a model from anywhere and anytime. Due to the growing project complexity (and related amount of data), the process of manually configuring every object and setting up the checks without automation, surely is neither simple nor time efficient. The Hazenberg team was impressed by the model checking capabilities offered by Verifi3D. The automation allowed them to customize their rule sets and to apply them to every object they want to check. Accuracy and time efficiency were the designated KPIs through which the team evaluated Verifi3D features. Their satisfaction surely says a lot about the software performance against their expectations. The unique technological implications provided by Verifi3D have demonstrated promising capabilities to boost Hazenberg Bouw and other business units to reach their goals, while overcoming the industry challenges outlined at the beginning of this article.

What does Verifi3D bring to professionals’ workflow?

The idea came when Frank Schuyer, CEO of Xinaps, wanted to design a software capable of smoothly linking the final design stage with the pre-construction phase. These are the most crucial stages of a building process, as they ensure the safety and accuracy of building models, as well as their compliance with local rules and regulations. The solution supports issue tracking based on BCF format. It allows users to create screenshots of issues, assign them to team members and export issue reports in different formats, such as .PDF or .CSV.
